The Quakers inexplicably appeared in the New York Times TAG CLOUD tonight. Not sure why Penn is represented, but it suggests that the geeks at the NYT should tweak the FONTSIZE algorithm to distinguish between number three (Virginia Tech) and number thirty-four (Penn). Talk about a useless cloud. Why bother???

Yesterday Ross posted this prescient pic of Al Franken. Clearly a parody of Justin and his ilk. Little did I suspect that Franken’s rig would be easily dispatched by MobleScoble. I planned to go to the Web 2.0 Expo today, but given Robert and Jeremiah’s coverage, I decided to stay at my desk.

“Coverage” is the issue here. It’s one thing to absorb CSPAN’s unblinking eye, but it’s another thing to endure the endless stream of ScobleFans. If nothing else, this experiment has shown us what it’s like to be Robert Scoble. I just hope there’s a pause button so he can take a leak in private.

Tags or Graffiti?


Ever since I was part of a failed taxonomy project in the ‘90s, I’ve had my eye on ways to classify media types online. I swooned for user generated tags and artful renditions of tag clouds. Enlisting users to categorize content seems like such a simple solution, a way of tapping into a large group of contributors. It’s also an entertaining window into what’s buzzing in the beehive mind. For example, the New York Time’s cloud shows us that searches for Imus are as big as searches for sex! Nothing else comes close. Do I care?


What use is that cloud to someone searching for things not in the cloud? It’s poorly designed, uninformative and there aren’t Boolean operators or faceted classification to cut through the chaff.

When I tag my photos in Flickr, I wonder if I’ve tagged my photos to optimize other people’s searches. There’s no guidance on the subject from the software, so it’s up to my vocabulary and intuition of what tags are best. That leads to an overabundance of tags. If I upload a picture of my car, I’ll tag it car. To cover more bases, I’ll also tag it auto, automobile, Mercedes, Mercedes Benz, MBZ, E320, sedan, four door, 4 door, etc… There’s got to be a better way to tag a photo of my ride. I want a plugin that guides my tag choices, perhaps suggesting frequently used tags that describe my post.

Optimized tagging is a tough nut to crack. Just because a tag is used infrequently doesn’t mean that it is not significant. And just because a tag is frequently searched for doesn’t mean that it has anything to do with your most relevant keyword. The New York Times tag cloud is a case in point. It’s a reflection of what’s on the mind of the readership and not a measure of all the news that’s fit to print. The fact that sex is the most frequently searched term means nothing to me when I’m trying to find the Chinese sesame noodle recipe from last month’s Sunday magazine section.

The issue of folksonomy is critical when considering the Enterprise 2.0 flavor of web development. Time is money in the work world, and free range tagging runs the risk of making search even less accurate. Serendipity is welcome when browsing photos on your own time, but can be a waste of time and money at work. The question becomes how can top down taxonomies and bottom up tags work together to optimize search?

I don’t have an answer yet, but there are clues. Social Media Now: Tag You’re It, a recent post on the Social Media Club blog by Jason Chervokas takes up the topic and points to some interesting research at Northwestern University. TagAssist is a proposed application that analyzes a collection of tags and makes suggestions to users as they tag their content. The software looks at tag frequency, eliminates near duplicates and synonyms leaving those tags that are most useful. It’s a brilliant idea but it only addresses user generated tags and TagAssist’s ability to optimize search remains unproven. At least it’s a start.

Top Down vs Bottom Up


The Gilbane Conference on Content Management is a sleepy affair attended by corporate practioners of content management. I went last year because I was curious to see how social media was viewed by the CMS crowd. I found that the solutions offered and the topics addressed were more or less the same as the ones we wrestled with in the mid to late ’90s. It felt like a retro timewarp, particularly when contrasted with Ad:Tech, running concurrently in SF.

This year’s Gilbane Conference is still sleepy, but there are signs of hope. The first sign was that Ross Mayfield was speaking on two panels. There’s a growing interest in things 2.0, particularly corporate blogs and wikis. Yet the potential of these tools remains poorly understood, even by the vendors touting Enterprise 2.0.

I stopped by one CMS vendor’s booth that advertised Enterprise 2.0 on its list of features. I was curious to learn what features they added to their CMS. When I asked about 2.0, the most articulate rep kept repeating “blogs and wikis” but was unable to drill down into the feature sets. When I asked about feeds and aggregation, he was unfamiliar with the terms. The buzzwords RSS and Atom only elicited a blank stare.


Fortunately, I met Bill Hutchinson, the CEO of Wordmap. Wordmap specializes in software to manage taxonomies and tag content. I found Wordmap interesting because Tacit Partners is looking for a tool to optimize and manage folksonomies for our clients. There’s a market opportunity for anyone that can bring some rationality to the chaos that user generated tags sometimes present. Hit or miss tagging is acceptable in the consumer space as demonstrated by Flickr, but it can be a waste of time and money in the corporate world if it doesn’t improve content search. What’s called for is a hybrid model that blends taxonomic systems with optimized folksonomies.

So that’s the challenge for Wordpad and their competitors. Can they open their thinking to include the wisdom of the crowd or are they too invested in the academic world of taxonomists to embrace the immutable trend?

Silicon Valley SMC Launch


NBC11 in San Jose hosted last night’s inaugural meeting of the Silicon Valley chapter of the Social Media Club. The local NBC affiliate generously provided a meeting room and snacks in their studios for over 50 attendees from traditional and independent media. A fair number of PR practioners joined the discussion as well.

The meeting followed the World Cafe format. About 10 tables for 5 were scattered around the room, given a question to examine, and report back to the room the results of the discussion. Then, the groups changed tables and examined a new topic with a new group. There were three rounds of tabletop discussion that allowed a group gestalt to emerge along with individual observations. It was the first time I attended a World Cafe style event and it was a welcome change from the typical “panel of experts” presentation because everyone had a chance to participate. The overarching theme was examining the impact of new media on local news. In other words, how can vlogging, blogging, and podcasting enhance the coverage of hyperlocal news.

The audience wasn’t interested in the typical Silicon Valley issues (What’s the business model? How do we monetize?). Instead, their concerns focused on content quality and trustworthiness, copyright and journalistic ethics. The discussion also revealed some current experiments in open source reporting. Jay Rosen‘s New Assignment is one example of how traditional media can tap into independent media for additional coverage and perspective on particular events or issues. New Assignment is also involved in Assignment Zero, an interesting experiment in crowdsourcing news coverage. Both experiments are relatively new and will be interesting to watch, and maybe participate in as well.

Last night’s meeting was a refreshing change from similar gatherings of bloggers and journalists last year. There was far more emphasis on collaboration rather than competition. There’s a willingness on both sides of the media divide to create something new and sustainable that is capable of capturing the scarcest resource of all…human attention.

The Social Media Club, Silicon Valley will be meeting again next month, time and date to be announced. NBC11 has offered to host the meeting again and committed to becoming a mainstay of our local chapter. Lots of interesting things are going to come from this collaboration. Stay tuned.
